- Van ALLEN RADIATION BELTS
-
- Van Allen belts. Layers of magnetic field around the Earth. These belts capture the electronically charged particles
- which are brought to Earth by solar wind. They are composed of the inner and outer belts. The inner belt, which
- contains high-energy protons, is located around the equator, all the way to the 30o latitude at the altitude of about 1,000
- - 10,000 km. The outer belt, which contains high-energy electrons, lies at the altitude of about 20,000 - 30,000 km and
- reaching to the 60o latitude. The intense radiation in Van Allen radiation belts is hazardous both to astronauts and their
- equipment, so space missions are planned in such a way as to minimize exposure to these radiation belts.
- The Van Allen belts were discovered by the first American satellite, Explorer 1, in 1958. They were named after Dr.
- James Van Allen, who was in charge of the experiments.
